Microbes of old Microbiology Meets Archaeology: Soil Microbial Communities Reveal Different Human Acti\nvities at Archaic Monte Iato (Sixth Century BC) – Rosa Margesin – Microbial Ecology (OA) EXCAVATION AREA OF THE NATIVE BUILDING

چکیده
Microbial ecology has been recognized as useful in archaeological studies. At Archaic Monte Iato in Western Sicily, a native (indigenous) building was discovered. The objective of this study was the first examination of soil microbial communities related to this building. Soil samples were collected from archaeological layers at a ritual deposit (food waste disposal) in the main room and above the fireplace in the annex. (...) Microbial community structures in the fireplace were similar and could be distinguished from those in the two deposit layers, which had different microbial communities. Our data confirmed our hypothesis that human consumption habits left traces on microbiota in the archaeological evidence; therefore, microbiological residues as part of the so-called ecofacts are, like artifacts, key indicators of consumer behavior in the past.

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of heavy metal tolerant soil microbes inoculation on growth and metal uptake of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum), couch grass (Triticum repens) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa) in a soil spiked (and subsequently aged) with increasing concentrations of Pb. A soil sample (soil 1) was spiked with increasing (0 to 1500 mg/kg) concentrations of Pb and in...
متن کاملSoil microbial communities are shaped by vegetation type and park age in cities under cold climate.
Soil microbes play a key role in controlling ecosystem functions and providing ecosystem services. Yet, microbial communities in urban green space soils remain poorly characterized. Here we compared soil microbial communities in 41 urban parks of (i) divergent plant functional types (evergreen trees, deciduous trees and lawn) and (ii) different ages (constructed 10, ∼50 and >100 years ago). The...
متن کاملEffects of Different Regeneration Scenarios and Fertilizer Treatments on Soil Microbial Ecology in Reclaimed Opencast Mining Areas on the Loess Plateau, China
The soil microbial community in reclaimed mining areas is fundamental to vegetative establishment. However, how this community responds to different regeneration scenarios and fertilizer treatments is poorly understood. This research evaluated plant and soil microbial communities from different regeneration scenarios and different fertilizer treatments. Regeneration scenarios significantly infl...
متن کاملDifferences in vegetation composition and plant species identity lead to only minor changes in soil-borne microbial communities in a former arable field.
To examine the relationship between plant species composition and microbial community diversity and structure, we carried out a molecular analysis of microbial community structure and diversity in two field experiments. In the first experiment, we examined bacterial community structure in bulk and rhizosphere soils in fields exposed to different plant diversity treatments, via a 16S rRNA gene c...
متن کاملDiversity and ecology of psychrophilic microorganisms.
Cold environments represent the majority of the biosphere on Earth and have been successfully colonized by psychrophilic microorganisms that are able to thrive at low temperatures and to survive and even maintain metabolic activity at subzero temperatures. These microorganisms play key ecological roles in their habitats and include a wide diversity of representatives of all three domains (Bacte...
